Bill Gates "Content is King" Article from 26 Years Ago is Still a Gem

On January 3rd, 1996, Bill Gates published an article on the Microsoft website called "Content is King".

Despite being published over 26 years ago, his essay is still relevant to this day. Content is an integral part of so many businesses. Without it, you’ll have nothing.

In the article, Gates stated, "The television revolution that began half a century ago spawned a number of industries, including the manufacturing of TV sets, but the long-term winners were those who used the medium to deliver information and entertainment."

If you think about it, the companies that provided the information and entertainment got really rich because they could interrupt viewers with third-party advertising and also promote their own products and services. The idea is still the same today.

When you create content, you attract interested people to your channels and if you understand how to monetize this attention, you too can cash in. Whether it is that you sell your own products, services, or advertising, there is an opportunity for you to earn from it.

Gates is a visionary and it's safe to say he had a clear understanding of how the internet would evolve and work and his prediction around content was spot on.

Some of the biggest companies today that were not even around when Gates wrote his article, were built on the idea of content aggregation and distribution. None of them would exist today if it wasn't for the content they host and serve up to people eagerly looking for information and entertainment.

Despite the significant changes the internet has gone through over the last 26 years, the idea that "Content is King" is as true today as it was when Bill first published his ideas.
